Welcome to 2012

As we reflect on the progress made in the reduction of plastic waste in 2011, we would like to officially welcome the following cities and counties to a plastic-bag free 2012, effective today: Los Angeles County (Unincorporated) – Effective today, a previous ban of plastic bags in larger retail stores, spreads to smaller grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores  and food markets.

Last week, Greenbiz.com posted an article by Marc Gunther titled “In Defense of the Plastic Bag” in which Mr. Gunther attempted to put forth some arguments that maybe plastic bags aren’t so bad, after all.  Unfortunately, many of his statements just don’t “hold water” when scrutinized  or balanced with other, extremely credible sources.   Today, an excellent reubuttal piece by Stiv Wilson

SEATTLE PASSES BAG BAN

In a unanimous vote by the Seattle City Council on December 19th, a plastic bag ban has been approved and will go into effect on July 1, 2012.  In addition to the ban on plastic bags at all retail and convenience stores, the Seattle ordinance imposes a nickle fee on paper grocery bags. Seattle joins the cities of Edmonds, Bellingham

Marin County’s Bag Ban Upheld by California’s Superior Court

Bag Monsters Outraged - flee Marin County today following a superior court decision to uphold Marin County’s disposable plastic bag ban.  The ruling was made by the Honorable Lynn Duryee.  The ruling ended the contentious battle between the the county and the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition’s attempt to have the County of Marin’s plastic bag ban, tossed out.
