As we reflect on the progress made in the reduction of plastic waste in 2011, we would like to officially welcome the following cities and counties to a plastic-bag free 2012, effective today: Los Angeles County (Unincorporated) – Effective today, a previous ban of plastic bags in larger retail stores, spreads to smaller grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores and food markets.

Last week, Greenbiz.com posted an article by Marc Gunther titled “In Defense of the Plastic Bag” in which Mr. Gunther attempted to put forth some arguments that maybe plastic bags aren’t so bad, after all. In a unanimous vote by the Seattle City Council on December 19th, a plastic bag ban has been approved and will go into effect on July 1, 2012. In addition to the ban on plastic bags at all retail and convenience stores, the Seattle ordinance imposes a nickle fee on paper grocery bags. Seattle joins the cities of Edmonds, Bellingham

The number of cities and counties which are now contemplating bans on single-use plastic grocery bags is encouraging.
