Congratulations to the forward-thinking San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority for voting to do away with single-use plastic bags throughout the county! In a meeting today, the board members voted 8 to 5 for the ban on plastic bags, and a 10 cent charge for paper bags. The ban will go into effect on October 1, 2012. According

As we reflect on the progress made in the reduction of plastic waste in 2011, we would like to officially welcome the following cities and counties to a plastic-bag free 2012, effective today: Los Angeles County (Unincorporated) – Effective today, a previous ban of plastic bags in larger retail stores, spreads to smaller grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores and food markets.

The latest results from the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the recycling rates for plastic bags, sacks and wrap have been released and they are pretty discouraging.
