The Battle for California Continues #SB270

What is the status of the statewide ban on single-use plastic bags anyway? Yaarrg, let me give you an update.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina has been putting forth extensive effort over the years to try and get the California State bag ban bill to pass. She believes the facts and often makes statements explaining the extensive damage single-use plastic bags cause to the environment. State Senator Kevin de Leon was previously greatly opposed to the bill and made it clear that he did not appreciate Molina’s environmental efforts.

However, now the tables have turned.

The original bill was written by Senator Alex Padilla, a very pro-environment individual. It was announced on January 24th that the Senate Bill renamed from SB 405 to SB270 is in fact moving forward, however, it is currently pending in the Assembly Labor Committee. Also there have been co-authors added to the bill: Sen. Ricardo Lara and… Sen. Kevin de Leon!

This is a very interesting situation because now, one who was previously very opposed to the potential bill will be serving as a co-author… For Bag Monsters sake, I hope the language is softened to the point that the bill once passed, will barely have any effect.

Oh, and here’s a lovely depiction of Supervisor Molina punching me in the face.
