Group of scientists argue plastic should be treated as hazardous waste

A team of scientists from the United States are advocating that plastics that commonly end up in landfills and oceans, mainly  single-use plastics, should no longer be classified as solid waste – the same category as food scraps and grass clippings.  Instead, they argue that plastic should be classified as hazardous waste.  They found that plastic debris is associated with 78% of the pollutants that the EPA regards as “priority”  due to their toxicity or persistence in organisms and food webs.

If the industrialized countries follow the recommendation of these scientists and reclassify plastics, surely a global shift from single-use disposable plastics to closed loop or reusable products will follow as people become aware and recognize that single-use plastic is simply irresponsible.  See related news articles.
