Seattle City Council Votes on Bag Ban

In a unanimous vote by the Seattle City Council on December 19th, a plastic bag ban has been approved and will go into effect on July 1, 2012.  In addition to the ban on plastic bags at all retail and convenience stores, the Seattle ordinance imposes a nickle fee on paper grocery bags.

Seattle joins the cities of Edmonds, Bellingham and Mukliteo in approving bans  on single-use plastic shopping bags.

A representative from Hilex Poly, a large manufacturer of plastic bags, suggested the industry would seek statewide legislation to encourage recycling, rather than fighting bans in every city.  Mark Daniels of Hilex Poly stated: “A statewide solution that includes recycling is more comprehensive…It also supports an American industry that provides tens of thousands of jobs.” according to the Seattle Times

The ordinance was supported by the Northwest Grocery Association and many environmental groups.

Congratulations to all of those who worked tirelessly on getting this legislation passed in Seattle!
