The City Council of Aspen, Colorado has passed an ordinance regulating single-use bags.  At the regular meeting of the Council on Tuesday, October 11, Council members voted 4-1 to approve the ordinance.

The approved ordinance will ban distribution of single-use plastic bags and will place a twenty-cent fee on paper bags.  The ordinance only affects retail grocery stores within the City of Aspen.

The ordinance will take effect May 1, 2012.

The new law will allow the grocery stores to keep $1000 per month to offset the cost of administering the program.  City Staff estimated it would cost approximately $43,000 to implement the law. Funds collected from the fee can only be used to implement the law and waste reduction programs in Aspen.
