Bag Monster™ will be in Santa Barbara on Friday, August 28th to kick off the Santa Barbara “Where’s Your Bag?” campaign. The event runs from 2-5pm on De La Guerra Plaza and will be educational, family-friendly and lots of fun! There will be information tables, great music by the Banana Slug String Band, reusable bag giveaways, a “Trashy Fashion Show” and a plastic bag collection site so you can rid yourself of any personal Bag Monsters™ that may be growing under your kitchen sink.

The “Where’s Your Bag?” campaign is the result of combined efforts by the City of Santa Barbara, Channelkeeper, Choose to Reuse, and the California Grocers Association. According to the Where’s Your Bag website, “the goal of the campaign is to educate the public about the negative environmental effects of plastic and paper single-use bags, and to promote the use of reusable shopping bags.”

The campaign provides educational materials for community members and participating local grocery stores including parking lot signs, in-store posters, employee buttons, information cards and decals for car windows. Volunteers will also be available to train store employees, free of charge, on how to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags.

With Californians using 19 billion plastic bags annually, the “Where’s Your Bag?” campaign is a necessary step in the right direction. The campaign will educate the public on harms of single-use bags to the environment and provide a simple solution to the problem – reusable bags.
